A Drawing Circle
A cadre of local artists get together as often as four times a
week to draw from a live model at The Academy of Carlo Pittore,
otherwise known as the Berry's old chicken factory. Carlo hires
the models, trains them, schedules the sessions, collects our
payments, and encourages us to keep the faith. His unwavering
dedication is an inspiration to us all. Most of us owe the drawing
habit to Carlo. When a session is over, we all fold up our kit, and troop out
the door, without seeing one another's work. Every three or four
months we throw a potluck supper before "class," and each pin
up a sample of our latest efforts. It's fascinating and stimulating
to see all the different techniques and ways of looking. This fall we decided to hang a group show, to share a wider selection
of our collegial work, and invite the public. An exercise in artistic
community, without hype, hauteur, or high expectations. A chance
to open our eyes together. Twelve of the regulars chose to hang their drawings, and examples
of their other artistry. Ranging from young artists who've never
shown before, to old hands who've made the gallery rounds for
years, we collectively displayed over 300 works. Quite an eyeful. I attempted to take digital photos of all the work, and then sort
it out to post here. I bit off more than I could chew. Shooting
in available light from odd angles reduced many takes to a sorry
blur. Pencil line-drawings proved especially hard to photo, and
the images posted are only a crude indication of the quality and
variety of work shown. My apologies to the artists under-represented. Here are some glimpses of the show and the audience reaction. Click on the artist's name to see examples of their work.
