Chana Boone came into the gallery last fall and was taken with the Moth Dancer (Hope). After we did the artist dance, she admitted she was one too. I asked to see some of her work, and she brought in "Genera." It made my hair stand straight up. She agreed to put on a show with us, but she asked to be paired with another artist, as she is new to Maine.
Mat O'Donnell has been a friend, and fellow conspirator since the 70s. His paintings give me the same chills Chana's does. When I asked if he was willing to join a two-person show in Bath, in March, he kindly accepted. Two edgy artists on the cusp of Spring. Makes me shivver. |
The paintings is this show are from a series of works Mat has created using aluminum aircraft paint [THE ALUMINUM WORKS]. The reflective qualities and metallic impasto effects of this paint make these images particularly other-worldly. Mat's paintings put me in a dream-like state. |
Chana has been creating theatrical images out of found materials since the 1980's. Her sculptural assemblages in this show put me in a place between laughter and unease. |
